Star Trek: Discovery finale spoilers: Morality vs. mayhem (video)
What makes the Federation different from everyone else? Is it the continuing capacity to do good? Maybe that is the case, but with them on the verge of vast annihilation, the question is raised as to whether or not there’s a different way to stay alive. What if losing this sense of morality allows them a better path forward? The debate had in the promo that CarterMatt has for you below is fantastic, and it’s one that Michael (Sonequa Martin-Green) reacts to strongly with her proclaiming that morality and ethics are, effectively, all they have. That’s their identity to a certain extent.
While there have been times through Star Trek: Discovery where we have feared the show has ventured a little too far beyond what the original vision for the series was, it’s rather nice to see things focus back in on the core of the series for this final chapter. What made watching these crews and characters so good for decades is that they are often about space explorers looking to do the right thing. There was an inspirational quality to them that was missing in other shows. We’ve become inundated in pop-culture now with ethically bad people; we watch them because they are a reflection of someone we don’t want to be. Yet, in this present era there is something wonderful about watching characters we want to be more like. While no character is perfect, Michael resembles something many should aspire to be.
The Star Trek: Discovery finale will of course be accompanied by more After Trek, and this will in turn carry the series off to an extended hiatus. There is already a season 2 order out there, which is a great thing given just how difficult some of these episodes are to produce with all of the effects. (Regardless of whether or not you love the story, do you at least agree that this is the most-beautiful Star Trek series of all time?)
