Super Bowl commercials 2018: Is WeatherTech ad controversial?
Here, we are discussing a company in WeatherTech who may have very well made one of the more controversial ads of the entire game. On paper, it seems as though it’s a good message: Building factories and hiring workers here in the United States to help the economy. We don’t see any issue with that no matter your political preference. However, where things start to get a little bit dodgier is when you get into some of the other imagery that’s in here — namely, the sight of workers building a wall.
The premise – Is this meant to be an endorsement of Donald Trump’s border wall? The company’s head has already blasted that narrative as being made up. Yet, the images that are there somewhat wash away what the other focus of the commercial is.
Brand recognition – You get mentions of WeatherTech throughout, but regardless of if it is intentional or not, our worry here is that the message, whether it be intentional or implied, is going to somewhat supersede everything else in the ad.

Creativity – It’s creative in the sense that it’s very different from just about every other ad that you are going to see during the game and with that, there’s a very good chance that it will be memorable no matter your affiliation or background. In turn, it’s going to be polarizing.
Our overall grade – C-. Much like the lumber ad last year, this commercial is great at enforcing a message but terrible at almost everything else. You forget pretty easily about what’s actually being sold and, instead, it’s just going to be “the commercial with the wall.”
