Chicago Fire season 6 spoilers: Are there problems ahead for Brett – Cruz relationship?
While we know that Cruz and Brett were at one point involved romantically, that feels almost like a century ago for the series. The two have moved on to other love interests and stories; for Cruz to revisit it now is problematic. The reason why we appreciate this story is because it’s actually one of the more realistic ones that a show like Chicago Fire could tell. The majority of time on TV if someone has feelings for a character, the other character reciprocates them on some level. Yet, that’s not always the case in life as it’s typically only a small percentage of the time when the feelings are a two-way street. In the case of Cruz, it’s complicated further by the fact that he knows it’s not the best idea in the world for him to have these feelings. He realizes that it could cause some problems for him and that is something that he has to try and reconcile. He doesn’t want to lose what he has, and that includes both a friendship and a great living arrangement.
These sentiments are something that executive producer Derek Haas echoes further in an interview with TVLine:
I think it’s one-way, Cruz towards Brett, and he realizes it. And it definitely rears its head over the next few episodes. But Cruz realizes that more important than the romantic feelings he has is the friendship that he has with her.
The thing that does make us happy upon reading this quote is that there could be a light at the end of the tunnel for the two characters with this story, and we’re not just building towards a situation where Cruz’s feelings continue to simmer to the point where his life is totally wrecked. These two characters are adults, and more than that they care about each other. We suppose that it’s possible that Brett’s feelings could change, but for now Cruz can’t count on that. He simply needs to find a way to move forward.
