How much confidence should we have in Outlander season 4 premiere date?

It may be a little early to officially designate an Outlander season 4 premiere date, but is it really so early that we cannot discuss it? We think that this is as ripe a time for discussion as any.

At this point, it seems easy to label September 9 as the season 4 premiere date and there is a reasonably good chance that this ends up being the case. After all, this is one day before the premiere date of season 3 in 2017 and this offers up the show enough time to air the entirety of the season before getting too far into the holidays.

So why aren’t we officially sold on this start date just yet? There are a few different key components here that you cannot completely forget about that could easily change things around.

1. Football – We understand that Outlander and the NFL are, for the most part, different audiences, but it’s still possible that the show won’t want to launch on the first weekend of the regular season.

2. Summer programming – Depending on what is being broadcast this summer, Starz could shift their date around a week or two. Or, it’s possible that a show like Power will not be over in time for Starz to air Outlander on the 9th.

3. The hiatus question – This is perhaps the most interesting question we have of all. During season 3, we had a one-week break in the action to build anticipation for the Print Shop reunion. Will that happen again? If not, you can easily make the argument to premiere Outlander on September 16 and just air all of the episodes straight through.

4. Production – It’s possible that the season starts a week later just to give the folks behind the scenes more time.

One thing that is worth noting is that this year, Starz doesn’t have to worry about airing opposite the Emmys — because the show is airing on NBC this year and they also have Sunday night NFL rights, the awards show will air on a Monday this year. This is the same thing that NBC did the last time that they had the Emmys a few years back. (It does show you how much power the NFL has over almost everything, but we recognize there is probably a better time in which to rant about that.)
