Grey’s Anatomy season 14 episode 11: Chandra Wilson enters the awards race

Bailey

Grey’s Anatomy season 14 episode 11 has now come and gone, and we’re certainly thrilled to be able to answer one of the long-simmering questions from this past week: Whether or not Dr. Miranda Bailey is gone for good.

We know that she is alive. Yet, things were touch and go for most of the episode. What we also know is that this episode was a defining performance from Chandra Wilson that exemplifies some of the best acting we’ve seen from her in years.

Over time, we do think that the opportunities to see Bailey as vulnerable have become somewhat few and far between. Like many other humans who find themselves in position of power, Bailey is not the sort of person who is altogether interested in relinquishing that. She doesn’t want anyone to realize the extent of her suffering, just as she is not altogether interested in giving up an inch to anyone at the hospital. She understands her obstacles just as she understands perception. The thing that she wants to ensure more than anything else is that she remains fully in power and completely undeterred in her pursuit of excellence.

Unfortunately, in her pursuit of power Bailey also gave us her health.

Was Wilson Emmy-worthy?

Absolutely. She was raw, she was powerful, she was heartfelt, and she was everything would would want in a great episode of Grey’s Anatomy. The biggest challenge for this show now is how many great Emmy contenders there are in the past. So far just this season alone, we’d submit Wilson, Camilla Luddington, and Caterina Scorsone for some of their standout episodes. We know that a big one is coming later on for Jessica Capshaw, so she may enter this race by the end of the season, as well.

We’d love to see Wilson nominated; we’d love to see any of these women nominated. The biggest thing that we hope Grey’s Anatomy does this year is challenge Emmy voters so that they realize that, in some ways, giving awards-worthy performances in season 14 is even harder than season 1. You may know the role better, but you also know it so well that it’s harder to make an individual episode stand out and feel fresh. Grey’s Anatomy is doing that, time and time again, through season 14.
