With the premiere episode coming up on Netflix tomorrow, is now the perfect time to start to discuss further the possibilities of an Altered Carbon season 2?
For the time being, we should note that nothing at present is certain when it comes to the show’s future and we may not learn about the series’ future for a while. This is a series that certainly has a lot going for it when it comes to style and ambition — it’s also got a spectacular cast. In the past, this is the sort of series that we’d consider to be a slam-dunk renewal by Netflix.
Yet, times have changed in some regards for the series, especially when it comes to the need that Netflix has for original material. Altered Carbon was not a cheap endeavor for the service to make, and as a result of that we imagine it is going to take a little bit of time for them to determine its future based on how it performers. We’ve seen them cancel costly series over the past year after just a season or two on the air, so a season 2 renewal here is far from a slam dunk. We’re optimistic, but it needs to capture the audience’s attention and imagination.
The biggest thing that is working against this series is merely a matter of timing — because of when Altered Carbon is premiering (right before the Olympics and the Super Bowl), it’s possible that the show gets shoved in the back-burner of some viewers’ minds. By the time in which they remember it, there is a reasonably good chance that they’ll be hooked on something else at that point. We’re hopeful that we’ll get to see more of the show, but if you really are excited about checking it out you need to ensure that other people are, as well! There are a solid couple of days to check it out and get hooked prior to the Super Bowl.
Obviously, we’re going to continue to share news/updates on all things Altered Carbon leading up the show’s premiere. Be sure to stay tuned for more of the latest!
