Is Barba leaving Law & Order: SVU? Latest promo suggests danger

Is Raúl Esparza leaving Law & Order: SVU — and his character of Barba? The promo for next week’s new episode suggests he’s in big trouble.

Based on the promo that aired after tonight’s episode, signs point towards the character landing in some hot water and being in a position where he could end up going to prison. If that happens, there’s a good chance that it could be going as a martyr, at least in his own mind. No matter what he does, he personally believes that he was in the right — we know that Barba is very much a man of conviction and with that, he’s going to keep fighting for what he believes in.

The problem here comes in that there may not be anyone else behind him in the case — including the law. His conviction and dedication over the course of this case could end up being his own worst enemy — that’s just something we’re preparing for now.

What we know about this episode is this: Sam Waterston is bringing back his original Law & Order character of Jack McCoy and, beyond that, you’re also going to be getting Philip Winchester making his first of presumably many appearances as Peter Stone. We love Barba, and of course we don’t want to see him go anywhere — we also love Esparza, a fantastic actor who is excellent in everything that he does. (Check him out on Hannibal if you haven’t already.) He’s been a part of SVU for years now and we know that any show or movie out there would want him — we’re being selfish in hoping that he sticks around here, but we really can’t help it!

No matter what happens in this episode, the promo suggests that you’re getting one of the best performances from Esparza to date. That’s saying something, given that we found him earlier this season to be nothing short of spectacular. The things we would miss the most about him are his scenes interacting with Benson and his ability to often pull a rabbit out of his hat as a prosecutor.
