Suits season 8: Katherine Heigl joins as series regular

Katherine Heigl

Suits season 8 is clearly looking to make a splash — while the USA series will not have either Patrick J. Adams or Meghan Markle in the cast, they have officially brought on board for Grey’s Anatomy star Katherine Heigl.

Heigl (who recently appeared on another legal drama in Doubt alongside Dule Hill) is going to be a series regular on Suits in the role of new partner Samantha Wheeler. She could be either a fantastic ally or a terrible adversary for the firm, given that she has a tendency to challenge established rules. She’s far from the first strong-minded character to enter the world of Suits but she certainly should bring a unique passion and voice to the series. Her addition follows the confirmation of Adams’ exit yesterday; it was already well-known that Markle would be exiting the series as she joins the British Royal Family with her wedding this spring.

Remember when we said that Suits was going to delay its return date so the episodes aired close to Markle’s upcoming wedding? Well, that definitely turned out to be the case.

Statement time!

First of all, take a look at what show creator Aaron Korsh had to say on the casting:

“I have always been a big fan of her work and was delighted to discover she was an avid Suits fan herself. I cannot wait to have her come play with our entire cast and crew. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Harvey, Louis, Donna and Alex as the mysterious Samantha Wheeler is a direct threat to their status quo. One thing is for sure — Samantha’s wit, charm, loyalty, strength and vulnerability will all be put to the test as she muscles her way into the firm currently known as Pearson Specter Litt.”

Meanwhile, Heigl added the following:

“Joining Suits was the perfect organic way to not only collaborate with [Korsh] I admire deeply, but to also become part of a show and cast that I am an immense fan of … I have watched Suits from the very beginning and feel incredibly lucky to be the newest member of the Pearson Specter Litt family.”

New episodes of Suits featuring Heigl will premiere later this year. We’ll wait and see how she fits in with the rest of the cast before rendering our verdict. We do think that trying to shake up a show with such an established core for so long is not going to be an easy task.
