Is Shameless ending after season 9? Emmy Rossum tweet misinterpreted

Is Shameless ending after season 9? We definitely understand the reasoning for posing such a question. It’s only renewed through the upcoming batch of episodes, and while it may only feel as though the series recently entered the pop-culture consciousness, Emmy Rossum, William H. Macy, and the rest of the cast have been hard at work on this show for almost a decade at this point. That is a long time to be working on any production — we know that Shameless is in theory a series that could last however long that the parties involved wanted for it to, eventually there is going to be an end date.

However, we do think at the moment that there are too many people out there reading a little bit too much into a tweet from Rossum regarding the show’s future. After the finale, the actress posted “one more season to come” on her social-media page. With that, there’s been assumptions that she means that after this season, the end is here or that she is leaving the show.

We don’t think there’s enough evidence out there that either one of these things are necessarily true. For starters, why would anyone know right now that the ninth season is going to be the end of the road right now? The scripts haven’t even been written, and Showtime and the show’s producers both have said that they are open to many more seasons of Shameless. Our feeling is that Rossum was speaking more from the vantage point of certainty, that there is for sure one more season to come. Even if she was thinking about leaving after season 9 now (which isn’t confirmed), there is still so much time before filming that there’s a chance she could change her mind.

Obviously if Shameless ends after season 9s ending a massive winner at Showtime. We’re just not feeling 100% confident at the moment in this when there is a chance for some other variables and surprises along the way. We’ll keep you up-to-date if there is some more news that is breaking on this subject.

Update: Rossum confirmed to us today that she was referring to the additional season that the show has. There is no immediate end in sight, as speculated here.
