Valor season 2 renewal, cancellation odds: Will CW drama return?
Let’s start by saying that we know Valor is a series that the folks over at The CW really wanted to see work for many different reasons. It was a chance to have another strong female-focused series to accompany Supergirl, and we know that network programming head Mark Pedowitz had been angling for some time to get a military show on the air.
Unfortunately, one of the things that Valor really struggled with was going on the air at roughly the same time as many of the other military shows that are out there this fall, including The Brave and SEAL Team. It made them all a little more interchangeable much to their collective detriment — though Valor was hurt more than most. It was already on a network with a smaller pool of viewers, so it didn’t have anywhere near as much leeway going into some of its episodes. If 50% of the average CBS viewers, for example, watched Valor, it would have a chance to stick around. That’s not so much true for this network.
What we’re building towards here is fairly simple: The odds are not tremendously great that we see a Valor season 2 in the future. There are already some media outlets out there calling it de-facto canceled. We never like to go that far since there has not been any formal decision made as to the future of the show yet; The CW will decide that officially at upfronts in May. It’s just not looking all that great at the moment. This is a series that is only averaging a 0.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic; its total-viewer numbers are not necessarily terrible compared to some of The CW’s other non-franchise programming, but they don’t tend to favor series that skew a little bit older. They would much rather have shows catering to a younger audience and ones that can build into something with broad appeal. The critical reception isn’t good enough to save Valor in the way that it has Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and we unfortunately see the network moving on since they’ve got so much other programming coming up.
