The Brave: The uncertain future for NBC drama after finale

Is The Brave renewed for season 2? That’s a question many may understandably be wondering in the wake of tonight’s finale airing on NBC.

For the time being, we unfortunately cannot hand down good, definitive news on the series’ future. The network has not confirmed a renewal at present, and we don’t quite get the sense that this is something that they are looking to do in the near future. If The Brave does end up getting another kick at the can, the renewal will probably not be announced until closer to the network upfront presentation in May.

Based on where the ratings are at present, though, there’s a cause for at least some hope. Back when the show drew a series-low 0.6 rating on January 8, we were worried that this was just a show that didn’t have an audience without The Voice around as a lead-in. Luckily, it just turned out that the steep decline was due in part to what was going on with the NCAA Championship game airing on that night. The Brave recovered on January 15 and January 22 to a 0.7 rating — while that’s not great by any means, it’s on par with many episodes of Blindspot and also ahead of how Taken is faring on Fridays by a fairly wide margin.

There is a chance for there to be another batch of episodes in the future, but we think a lot of that depends heavily on where NBC wants to schedule it and their optimism towards some of their upcoming pilots. We don’t foresee The Brave being a fall show again; we actually could envision it more being like the now-canceled The Night Shift, a series that the network can air in the summer where there isn’t a whole lot of competition. That may enable this series to have a little bit more of a spotlight around it. That, in turn, would help its numbers and better work to ensure that it sticks around for many years to come.
