Saturday Night Live: Is Bailey Gismert best new Weekend Update character in some time?
With this, it feels like we may have one of our best new Weekend Update characters in a long time — at least in terms of an original one. Kenan Thompson as LaVar Ball may still be our favorite of the year, but given that this is an impression we have to consider that a little bit different. This was such a random idea but it totally worked for this show — we also like to think that most YouTube personalities are so quick to change their opinion on things based on what someone is saying too them.
The best thing about this character was not her pretending to cry, her being indifferent to some films while hating Lady Bird, or her propensity to cling to her hair for dear life — it was her patience. There was enough time given to Bailey Gismert to milk some of the funny and get to understand more of her point of view.
What Bailey may also represent is a further rise of Heidi Gardner as a performer to watch on this show. She’s had a number of notable moments since joining before the season, but this was a showcase of her ability to play strange characters who thrive in making other characters uncomfortable.
Given that Bailey is a teen film critic, we’re not sure just how often we’ll be seeing her from here. Maybe around summer movie season? That seems to be the next great opportunity to really show this character off, but we certainly feel like we’re going to have a chance to see her again.
