This Is Us season 2: Stephen Colbert mocks Crock-Pot outrage

Crock-Pot outrage

Following Tuesday night’s new episode of This Is Usit was clear that someone was going to have to ruthlessly take on some of the people freaking out over the Crock-Pot calamity to end all calamities. Since it was revealed that a faulty Crock-Pot, paired with a misplaced dishrag, caused the Pearson family home to catch ablaze, the internet has been none too pleased. There have been memes, videos, and all sorts of assorted nonsense where people are threatening to take out vengeance on their Crock-Pots for killing Jack Pearson.

If there’s one word that we would use to describe most of this, it’s “amusing.” Our heart goes out to some of the people who love Jack — we’re right there with you — but is a killer Crock-Pot really responsible on its own? Can all Crock-Pots be to blame? The internet reaction has been mostly overblown, as most internet controversies are. If more than two people actually throw out their slow cookers because of this, we’d be surprised.

The entire calamity is perfectly mocked by Stephen Colbert on The Late Show this week — in the video below Stephen touches not just on some of the headlines surrounding said Crock-Pots, but also the ridiculous reactions. Probably the most ridiculous one comes from the Crock-Pot company themselves. Remember when we said that they handled the storm of attention pretty well on Facebook? Well, that may have been short-lived. The company released a new statement, one in which they express their hope that This Is Us, in a future episode, figures out a way in which to show that not all Crock-Pots are godless killing machines (to quote another old Colbert trope) out to destroy families. Basically, they want This Is Us to educate the world that Crock-Pots are safe. That’s not going to happen.

We like to think of this video from Colbert as a great laugh, and a way to distract us from the fact that we’re probably going to be bawling our eyes out when we actually learn how Jack dies.
