Will Saturday Night Live fill an Alec Baldwin – Donald Trump void tonight … if there is one?
The question what we have is simple: Where is Alec Baldwin? Will he show up as Donald Trump, and if he does, what will he talk about? One of the more interesting things about the first couple of episodes this year is that for all of the various Trump headlines (and there have been many) Baldwin has yet to appear in 2018. We’re sure that he’s busy on other projects, but this does feel like the right time to bring him back.
Yet, we know there’s also another question out there: Is there really a reason to bring him back unless it’s one of the most creative Trump sketches ever? Some of the cold opens this season featuring the President have gotten a little bit stale? The Trump character’s lost a little of his edge over time, really to the point where we don’t quite know what Baldwin’s take on him is completely other than an exaggerated caricature of the commander-in-chief. We’d like to see more of a narrative with him and to see more of the bite that made Baldwin’s Trump ratings gold in the firm place. You can leave him in the Oval Office, but you need to take some big risks and find a way to get people really buzzing again. Go crazy. Get weird. If Trump isn’t tweeting about you angrily after the fact you’re probably doing something wrong.
Want to prepare for tonight’s SNL more? The promo is a great way to do that as Ferrell and musical guest Chris Stapleton talk about wine and other ridiculous stuff. It’s odd to not have a current cast member in here, not that we need one. Ferrell is always great and Stapleton has surprisingly-good comedic timing.
