Game of Thrones season 8 premiere date will reportedly be in April 2019

While it’s not 100% official as of yet, it does feel as though we’re a little bit closer to a Game of Thrones season 8 premiere date than ever before.

In a new interview with Metro UKseries star Maisie Williams had the following to say regarding production for the final six episodes, including what is a surprisingly-quick turnaround given just how long production is going:

“We wrap in December and we air our first episode in April [2019]. That’s a four-month turnaround for these huge episodes. There’s a lot that goes into the final edit. You would not want to rush this season at all. We owe it to our audience and our fans to really do this final season to the best of our abilities.”

Basically, what you are seeing here is HBO spending almost a year and a half making six episodes of television. (Remember, season 8 technically started in the fall of 2017.) Why so long? There are many different reasons for it, but one of the biggest ones just has to be everything and the kitchen sink that the network is throwing into these.

HBO recently confirmed that the final season would air in 2019, and when you think about it April actually makes sense. This is when the majority of the show’s seasons premiered over the years, and there is plenty of room at this point for Game of Thrones to completely dominate the ratings. There are no sports major competitions at this time and we feel like with the stakes being what they are, the majority of viewers out there are going to choose Game of Thrones in a heartbeat over some of the other stuff that is out there.

On the other side of the Game of Thrones final season airing it feels almost certain that HBO will continue to explore the world of Westeros. The network has already confirmed that they are developing a number of spin-off ideas. One of these will likely come to fruition, though there is no timetable as of yet as to when it will air.
