Why isn’t Game of Thrones season 8 premiering this year? HBO boss explains

Game of Thrones premiering

Why isn’t Game of Thrones season 8 premiering this year? It’s a great question, especially since there are fewer episodes and this is the longest hiatus we’re facing in the entire show’s history.

In speaking on this subject (per TVLine) while at the TCA Winter Press Tour, HBO’s programming head Casey Bloys made it clear that the decision to wait on Game of Thrones until next year was one based on what showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss wanted to do. They want to make sure that the final season lives up to the hype — which is understandable, given that we’re talking about ambitious storytelling from start to finish:

“It was based on when they felt that they could deliver a show that they are most proud of … I suppose we could’ve said to them, ‘You must deliver by this date.’ But we’ve worked with them a long time and I trust them to tell us, ‘This is the time we need to make it good.’ So I don’t know that it’s a delay as much as it is ‘This is the time required to deliver at the level that they think the fans expect.’”

So while we may be fairly upset about the long wait, at the end of the day it’s going to be for the best. Filming for Game of Thrones is still far from over, and it will be going on over the course of the next several months. At the time filming is done, maybe we can talk at that point about getting a chance to see an official trailer or getting some other good stuff out there when it comes to the show.

One other thing to remember: With this long wait, there are probably more people who are going to be able to catch up maybe giving it a chance to smash some ratings records.
