Grey’s Anatomy season 14: April’s ex-fiance Matthew Taylor returning

Grey's Anatomy season 13 episode 22

CarterMatt said many weeks ago that we hoped Grey’s Anatomy season 14 was about to give us a rather hefty dose of April Kepner story; ultimately, it seems as though the series has listened to our call.

According to a new report coming in right now from Entertainment Weekly, Justin Bruening has signed on to appear in at least one episode of the ABC drama in the role of Matthew Taylor, April’s ex-fiancé who she infamously left at the last minute in order to be with Jackson. The two had a whirlwind relationship of their own and eventually a baby together. Unfortunately, they are no longer together, but we’re still rooting for them. We already know that the Japril ‘shippers out there are strong — they recently won a CarterMatt poll on the subject of what is the most-popular Grey’s Anatomy centric ‘ship by a fairly wide margin.

So what is Matthew doing back in April’s orbit now? That’s a great question, given that the last thing presumably he should want is to be around someone who shattered his heart on the level that April did. Given that he is a paramedic, though, there’s a chance that he could just turn up here to drop off a patient.

In a statement, here is what executive producer Krista Vernoff had to say on the subject:

“Matthew Taylor will pay a visit to Grey Sloan and the impact of his return will see April reevaluating some of the decisions she has made in her life.”

Could Matthew Taylor appear in the spin-off?

Given that the focus of that show is on firefighters and presumably paramedics, that’s a great question to wonder. The door seems to be open to it, and it could be a way to give that character some more burn (pun intended).

The latest new episode of Grey’s Anatomy season 14 is coming to ABC on Thursday night.

What do you think Matthew Taylor’s return to Grey’s Anatomy season 14 means for the series as a whole? Be sure to share right now in the comments!
