Vikings season 5: Who died in midseason finale?
Halfdan was one of the biggest casualties of the night, and his death came about as a result of a key decision that he made in the midst of battle. Sometimes with this show, it really is all about some of the alliances you choose and the reasoning for making them. He decided to join Bjorn as an attempt to make good on Bjorn previously saving his life. Unfortunately, nobody could save him tonight as he was killed in the midst of all of the violence… and it was his brother Harald that took his life.
Given that Jasper Pääkkönen appeared in more than twenty episodes of the series, it feels pretty clear that this is a pretty significant blow to the series — to go along with that, this is the second big blow the past two weeks. Remember that we also just lost Aethelwulf and there is a pretty good chance more deaths will be coming. Unfortunately, we’ve seen over the years with this show that they are not exactly in the business of bringing characters back from the dead, even in flashbacks or robust dream sequences. With that, we unfortunately feel like this is probably the end of the road for Jasper on this show.
If there is a silver lining for the actor, it is this: If he wants to do American television in the future, he is leaving this show at a perfect time given that pilot season is underway and he may be able to use his Vikings fame to land other projects. Or, he may be able to take on more notable projects overseas. Given that this is a show where people do have a tendency to die pretty often, he really should just be grateful to make it as long as he ultimately did.
