Big Little Lies season 2 casts Meryl Streep as Perry’s mother
In what has to be one of the most surprising TV headlines in some time, the incomparable Streep is now a series regular for the second season of HBO’s critically-acclaimed series, and she is set to appear as Mary Louise Wright, mother to the late Perry Wright (played by Alexander Skarsgard). HBO sets up her season 2 story as follows:
Concerned for the well-being of her grandchildren following her son’s death, Mary Louise arrives in Monterey searching for answers.
This confirms what seems to have been a given from the first season, and that is the death of Perry. It certainly appeared as though the character was being killed off, but some speculation surrounding Skarsgard’s potential return for season 2 clouded that situation slightly. It now appears as though the actor will return to presumably play Perry in flashbacks — we’re sure that nobody wants to eliminate the possibility of having scenes with Skarsgard and Streep in the same place.
This casting sets the stage presumably for some epic showdowns for Streep and Nicole Kidman, who already won all the awards for playing Celeste on the first season. The two join Reese Witherspoon as a part of the season 2 cast and the easy presumption to make at the moment is that many other familiar faces from the first season will also return. Big Little Lies season 2 begins production in March; there is no firm premiere date as of yet, but if we had to guess we would say that come either late 2018 or early 2019, the show will be back on the air with another batch of episodes. Big Little Lies does not run super-long seasons, which is why they can probably sign this sort of talent. It’s not too big of a weight onto Streep’s schedule to do this show for a number of weeks and then go on to whatever sort of other acclaimed project could eventually await her.
