This Is Us season 2: After Jack dies, what happens to Milo Ventimiglia?
For much of the series to date, learning about his death has been one of the main driving forces of the series. This is something that looks as though it will culminate in the Super Bowl episode, where Jack tries to do everything that he can in order to save everyone from the fire. The clues out there are limited — we know that Kate claims that she blames herself for what happens, and other than that and the fire that’s all we know. The fire itself may not be as responsible for his death as you would first assume.
Is Milo Ventimiglia leaving the series after the fact? It’s a strange question to ponder, but it’s also one that, understandable, we need to think about on some level given that we’re getting near the zenith of the actor’s story as Jack. Once we know the truth about Jack, what else is there to tell? Is it possible that you are going to be able to cycle through some of the other past highlights of his life in the same exact way? We wonder if there will be a time in which there are Jack stories left to tell without either regurgitating things or doing something akin to “Jack goes to the grocery store to pick up waffles.” Luckily, we are not quite there just yet.
For the time being, Milo is not going anywhere. He confirmed as much to Entertainment Weekly in setting up the big Super Bowl episode (which you can preview more over at the link here):
“When they learn what happened to Jack, I think people are going to find themselves surprised with their own emotion. I really think people are going to have a hard time accepting it, but what they should know is that even when we do find out Jack’s death, it doesn’t mean that Jack goes away. That’s a good thing to remind people of — I’m not going away from the show, Jack is still around. There is still so much story to mine in this world of This Is Us … I think at that point then you gotta start wondering if anyone else is going to die. I’m going, ‘Whoo! All right! I’m off the hook!’”
Obviously, it’s still going to be hard to see what happens with Jack play out given that this is the single biggest event in the entire lives of the Pearson family. It’s painful, mostly because Jack has been set up as this idyllic, inspirational father figure. He is the father so many out there wish that they had.
