This Is Us Super Bowl episode will (appropriately) focus on football
The Pearsons are enormous Steeler fans, and based on what executive producer Isaac Aptaker told TV Guide, they are ready to dive into the NFL as big subject matter:
“We’re not going to shy away from the football. We’re going to lean into the football … It’s just, it is a really huge, awesome episode of television. Dan [Fogelman, series creator] wrote this script that just was incredible.”
How emotional will it be? Probably very, just because that’s the nature of this show. Yet, we feel like part of the goal here is to tie in nostalgia with many of the feelings that Americans have regarding football. Much of the charm of the NFL comes out of it being something that you watch with your parents growing up — it brings people together and creates many fantastic memories of being able to watch big games and celebrate when things go well. It’s a rare experience that is hard to get in other ways.
One of the things that we’re the most curious about is simply how much the Steelers were chosen for the Pearsons because they are this family with a lengthy history of success. They’re not fans of some long-woeful NFL team and have opportunities to experience a number of highs and lows. The Steelers win a lot, and that probably helps to create some more memories.
As for how many people are going to be around to watch the This Is Us Super Bowl episode, a lot of that is going to depend heavily on how close the game is. Let’s just hope that it’s closer than the showdown between the Philadelphia Eagles and Minnesota Vikings was.
