SAG Awards 2018 opening: Kristen Bell shades Melania Trump
The SAG Awards 2018 opening was admittedly one of the things that we were the most excited about going into the show. After all, Kristen Bell was hosting the show! It’s not often that the SAG Awards even have a host, and to have it be someone who is this passionate and fun make things so fun was the icing on the cake.
From the jump, Bell was brilliant, calling herself a “narcissist” after telling her own version of the typical “I’m an actor” speech that you often get at this awards show. She also did her own version of a subtweet about Melania Trump (talking about how she wanted to make her platform as the First Lady of the SAG Awards “anti-bullying”) while also referring to The Handmaid’s Tale as a “documentary.”
Overall, we like Kristen Bell and that was enough to make us fond of the opening. Her performance here only added to that. We also like that she gave a shout-out to all of the different actors who are out there, including the ones who are auditioning for doubles of commercials and are sharing an apartment with five or six other people, desperate to figure out a way to make ends meet. This was surprisingly emotional and that was something we didn’t expect — coupled with some Frozen hype. Hey, the second movie is coming out at some point in the near future!
The one thing that did bum us out about this opening was that it was short — we could’ve listened to Kristen go on for a little longer. Yet, this was no lengthy comedic monologue and we’re probably just going to have Bell pop in and out throughout the show.
One last thing we’ll say here: Everyone out there should go watch the second season of The Good Place — it’s brilliant, and you will be happy that you did. (Also, the Jacksonville Jaguars references were super-timely.)
