There’s even more news to get excited about right now if you are a fan of Law & Order: SVU — Dean Winters will be returning for another go as Cassidy!

In a post on Instagram recently Winters confirmed the glorious news with a not-so-subtle nod to the show’s theme song. The question that you do have to basically wonder now is this: Why could we be getting Cassidy back now? When we saw him early on this season, it was for that Benson – Noah story that had us temporarily shaking in our boots that Olivia could end up having her child taken away from her. Obviously, we hope that a return for Cassidy doesn’t have anything to do with Olivia this time around; in truth, there are many different reasons why we could be seeing this character appearing, including taking on some politics within the squad.

Is it possible that his return is tied in some way to what’s happening with Olivia and Dodds? Certainly it is, but there are also a wide array of possibilities that are out there. One of the things that you ultimately have to remember here is this: Winters’ next SVU appearance is many episodes in the future. As a result of that, it feels fairly possible that Cassidy’s return is tied to something that has not even happened on the series yet.

Ultimately regardless of the reason why Cassidy is returning, we are by and large just happy that he is. Anytime that we can get some familiar faces on the series who’ve been there in the past is a cause for great celebration. That is one of the reasons why we always celebrate when Peter Hermann turns back up. This is a show with almost twenty years of history and the producers have done a great job in that time of cultivating a living, breathing world. There are always opportunities to see familiar faces reenter the picture.
