Why Homeland season 7 is set in Washington DC
At the end of season 6, we saw the victory of President Keane and the attempted assassination on Inauguration Day. In the aftermath of that there were many questions, but one of the biggest ones we wondered was simply this: How much would the story reflect what is happening with the Trump Administration? How different would it be if Hillary Clinton won the election?
In responding in part to the latter question and filming in Washington, we do think what executive producer Alex Gansa had to say to the Washington Post recently is rather interesting:
“If Hillary Clinton won, would we be filming “Homeland” in D.C. now? I think not. There is something compelling and, for some of us, disturbing about what’s happening to the country. It gives us an opportunity to comment on that by telling the story there. If Hillary Clinton were president, it would be business as usual. It wouldn’t be this 24-hour news cycle where something crazy happens every day. I don’t think there would be such attendant anxiety about where we are, and that lends itself to a thriller.”
Do we think that we would have an interesting season if Clinton was present? Certainly, but the focus probably would have been shifted over to different subjects and different things. We imagine that we would see more of an international season, one where important issues were present that you don’t often hear about. With the political landscape as it is, though, Homeland will focus on storylines that many people out there are familiar with. The larger question that you do have to wonder now is how the writers cane make the stories different, as opposed to just presenting something that has been done many times over.
