Saturday Night Live music: Troye Sivan performs ‘My My My!,’ ‘The Good Side’

Fred

Troy Sivan was the musical guest on this weekend’s Saturday Night Liveand we’re sure older viewers may have had to do a little research here. While Sivan is huge with younger viewers (he was trending on Twitter before his performance), he’s still very much an up-and-comer to some others. This was a chance for him to introduce himself to his largest possible audience to date.

So what did Sivan choose to perform on SNL tonight? Think “My My My!”, a song that allowed him to move around the stage. It’s a track with an atmospheric new-age sort of vibe to it, and not necessarily something that you would hear in 2018. It was a mixture of a wide array of different genres. There was a little pop, a little dance, a little EDM, and then a little bit of African instrumentation that touched back to some of his South African roots.

While we cannot say that we had ever heard a single song from Sivan before this weekend, we will say that we rather enjoyed this. One of the things that we like from SNL performances is that we can understand some of what the song is about and who the artist is. Also, we think these performances are better when they are either A) fun or B) giving us a message. This wasn’t meant to be all that deep, but it did have us bobbing our head along and we wouldn’t have minded it continuing for a while.

Second song, “The Good Side” – This was certainly something different, wasn’t it? This was a slower, meaningful ballad that touched on love, sorrow, and a number of other different things. This showed a little bit more of Sivan’s range and what he is capable of when it comes to versatility.

Basically, we do think that this weekend was a great opportunity for Sivan to showcase the full extent of his musical diversity. We had a chance to learn a lot of different things about him as an artist and do think that some of this is going to carry him towards having a long career in this industry.
