Saturday Night Live should address government shutdown, fake news awards

One of the new ways in which we are previewing new episodes of Saturday Night Live now is by thinking a little bit outside of the box. At the time of writing this, we imagine that many of you out there already know that Jessica Chastain is hosting. Meanwhile, we also have a feeling that many of you have already seen the promo below. (If you haven’t, it absolutely is worth a laugh.)

What we want to focus on here instead is this: What are some of the subjects that SNL should focus on for laughs this week? We’ve got a few suggestions, though some of them are pretty easy to project.

1. The government shutdown – This one feels absolutely predictable, but we don’t mind that at all. It’s one of the bigger government stories of the year for a wide array of reasons — while it’s not clear if Alec Baldwin will be around tonight, this seems like the perfect time in which to bring his Donald Trump back to the show.

2. Fake News Awards – This also seems fairly appropriate, given that this ridiculousness happened earlier this week. The only reason why it probably isn’t getting more play at the moment is because of the government shutdown plus also the fact that there are so many political stories at this point that things change almost every day.

3. Chastain doing something insanely silly that you would never expect – This isn’t so much topical, but we really want to see someone long known as one of Hollywood’s most-accomplished serious actors just go out there on the stage and do something insanely silly. Why not have a little bit of fun and throw people off completely? We want to see some sort of ridiculous accent or costume.

All in all, we expect a different, interesting episode of the show tonight. There’s always a good toss-up / mystery factor anytime that you bring someone on board who doesn’t necessarily have a lot of experience in live comedy. Given that Chastain pretty much wins at everything, we’re pretty sure she will also win here.
