Call the Midwife season 7 video: Leonie Elliott, Jennifer Kirby on new episodes

Leonie Elliott -- Call the Midwife

Call the Midwife season 7 is set to officially premiere on BBC One this weekend, and what better way to prepare for it than watching the new video below?

We like to think that this latest video via the British talk show Lorraine is an excellent little window into not only what’s happening in tomorrow’s first episode, but the entire batch of episodes as a whole. This is a very poignant and transformative year ahead for Nonnatus House and the entire region of Poplar, mostly because we are getting to meet some new faces and also understand new cultures.

One of the most important people at the heart of the show this year is Lucille Anderson, a new characters played by Leonie Elliott. This video features Elliott and Jennifer Kirby (who plays Valerie Dyer) discussing the impact that Lucille has on the show, and how having someone from West Indian roots helps to bring a new perspective to Nonnatus. There is also an element of historical accuracy that is present here, as there were many West Indian men and women who were coming to the UK during the 1950’s and 60’s.

Also in this video there is a discussion of what is one of the smartest things about Call the Midwife as a whole — the ability of the writers to tell a story that completely throws you off. You can go into an episode of this series thinking that it is really going to be all about nostalgia and warm, welcoming characters, but there are also important social issues discussed. They are never presented in a way that is aggressive or preachy; instead, the goal here instead is to find a way to tell these stories that makes you understand the issue. They want to give you an opportunity to have informed opinions and to see things from a human perspective.

Ultimately, it’s remarkable still just how many stories on this show, even though they are set in the past, are still relevant in the modern day.
