The Crown season 3: Paul Bettany replacing Matt Smith as Prince Philip
According to a new report coming in from Variety, Bettany would be joining Broadchurch and The Night Manager star Olivia Colman, who is replacing Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth, for the upcoming third season. It was first reported well over a year ago that the intention was to never utilize Foy, Smith, or any other original cast members for The Crown beyond the first couple of seasons. Because of the significant time jumps that are taking place in the story, the goal here is very clearly to show many different aspects of the Royals’ lives and how they tackle different eras. The first two seasons showed us the early days of Elizabeth’s reign and the struggles that she had within her marriag.e Things may be a bit more stable moving into seasons 3 and 4, but there is still quite a bit of chaos that will transpire in other forms. Think of all of the historical crises that the Queen has helped to navigate over the course of her very-long reign.
We know that there are going to be many people out there eager to learn who the rest of the Crown season 3 cast is going to be; rest assured that we’re feeling the same way! Hopefully at some point over the next couple of weeks some more names are going to be announced and we’ll have an even better opportunity to see what this ensemble is going to look like.
At this point, it is certainly fare to say that the pressure is high — after all, The Crown through two seasons has shown itself to be an awards-show magnet.
