MacGyver season 2 ratings tie Hawaii Five-0 for Friday win
We’ll admit that when we learned about Blindspot and Taken moving to Fridays, we had our concerns about whether or not they could take a chunk out of the Peter Lenkov one-two punch starting at 8:00 p.m. Eastern. That really hasn’t happened. Last night MacGyver drew a 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic — not only did this tie its season high, but it was also enough to tie Hawaii Five-0 for #1 on the night.
As for why MacGyver is performing as well as it is so far through season 2 (it’s only down 7% in viewers from season 1, and the season 1 numbers are inflated in part because of a big premiere audience), the biggest reason is just the fun factor of it. You know what you’re going to get by and large when you watch MacGyver, and that at the same time it’s probably going to be entertaining. A little bit of consistency goes a long way since it signifies loyal viewers — these are people who aren’t going to be going anywhere so long as you can contribute the same quality product. Having a show that is fun, nostalgic, and distracting from the rest of the world is important to generating great success in 2018.
In general, CBS seems to be pretty well-positioned to be successful on Fridays for many years to come. Remember, in addition to the shows mentioned above and also Blue Bloods, Lenkov and Eric Guggenheim are also developing a new version of Magnum PI. There is no word as of yet as to where that show could premiere, but Fridays could always be an option for it down the road. If CBS picks this show up, they are basically allowing themselves to have even more flexibility in the years to come.
