Norman Reedus not leaving The Walking Dead — now or ever

Norman Reedus

For however long The Walking Dead lasts, Norman Reedus is going to be a part of it, provided of course that nobody behind the scenes kills Daryl Dixon off. (Just for those curious — we were never worried about that happening until the midseason finale, which set the stage for the death of Carl.)

Before we get to anything else, let’s share what Reedus had to say on the subject of his future to Entertainment Weekly:

“I love being on the show … I could do this until it ended. There’s part of me that really wants to bookend the show. I started the show and I want to end the show.”

It almost goes without saying in our mind that Daryl should be one of the last people standing, and to us one of the better endings would be for him to somehow take on traits of both Carl and Rick and eventually become the leader that Alexandria needs for the future. He may be a lone wolf, but we still think that he is more than capable of being something more than that. He could be a source of inspiration and insight; he can teach future generations how to survive. The Walking Dead may already have a hard time figuring out how they are going to survive losing Carl, and it could end up being so much worse if they ever get to a point where they decide that Daryl needs to go. That is one character death that we’re not altogether sure that they could walk away from and still keep many of their fans. There are just so many people deeply invested in this character and his journey.

Ultimately, we do imagine that there will be more death coming on The Walking Dead, whether it be this year or at some other point down the road. We do still strongly believe that we’re going to get to a tenth season in additional to the already-renewed season 9, and we wouldn’t be altogether shocked if that is where Rick Grimes’ story comes to a close. The show starting with Rick opening his eyes in many ways; it could end with him closing them. It’d be almost similar to Lost and Jack in that regard.
