The Good Doctor video: What does Shaun Murphy’s two weeks’ notice mean?

Good Doctor episode 2 ratings

In preparation for the latest episode, we’ve got a new The Good Doctor video that raises an important question: What does Shaun Murphy’s two weeks’ notice really mean? Can we take him precisely at his word?

There are two different schools of thought that we can look at this situation from — taking aside the fact that Freddie Highmore is the star of the show and it’s very hard to imagine him departing one of ABC’s highest-rated shows.

First theory – Shaun is a very determined guy, and by giving two weeks’ notice he has no intention to do anything other than leave. He’s just trying to do so in a way that is reasonably respectful and fitting for who he is as a person. He may not have the strongest social skills, but he also understands that this is the right thing to do if he intends to leave the hospital.

The reasoning why in his head is pretty clear: Shaun wants to be near Lea, and that makes sense given that the A) the two recently kissed and B) she encouraged him to be independent and lead his own life.

Second theory – Shaun does want to leave the hospital right now, but maybe on some level him giving two weeks’ notice is him giving himself a way out in order to change his mind. This decision may be impetuous, but not as much as outright leaving.

Basically, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Dr. Glassman taking it upon himself in order to devise some sort of plan to convince Shaun to tick around, one that could very well involve reminding him of why he went into medicine and why he is so good at the job. We’re not altogether sure that this strategy will work but it’s certainly worth a shot for him. He cares about Shaun, and as a result of that he’s going to do whatever he can in order to fight for him.
