What does Elementary season 6 airing in the summer mean for season 7 odds?
With this lengthy hiatus in mind, coupled with the fact that the majority of the season is going to air in the summer, one of the other questions that we wonder is this: What does this mean for the show’s season 7 renewal odds? Basically, CarterMatt foresees this as it forcing CBS to make a quicker decision on more episodes than they would the bulk of the other series that are on their network.
Shows designated as “fall – spring” series have to figure out whether they are coming back for another season typically by around the start of the summer. After a while, actor contracts expire and the cast becomes available to do other things. You can’t leave people waiting around forever, especially since they all are more than capable of landing other jobs on other shows / movies. This is a super-competitive industry, after all, and there are a wide array of different opportunities out there for actors of Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu’s caliber.

Personally though, we don’t think CBS is going to roll the dice on the future of Elementary and will probably have it figured out by the time they get around to the end of May. While this is not a highly-rated show, it’s a good utility player; also, we feel like the success of The Amazing Race this winter proves that the right show can succeed, even if it’s struggled in the past, if you find the right time in which to air it. We’re not sure if Elementary will have any gas left in the tank after a season 7, but we feel fairly confident that a season 7 is going happen.

It SHOULDN’T get a Season 7 unless they get a new showrunner and a new writing team. This show’s been stuck in a rut unworthy of its stellar talent for five seasons now. And you’re right, Lucy Liu and Jonny Lee Miller should be free to explore other opportunities if Elementary doesn’t get its act together and quick. The show needs a major shakeup / jolt of new creative energy.
Unfortunately, I don’t see that happening. Looks like much more of the same credulity-stretching, exposition-filled crime of the week committed by a rich white male, with its usual zero character growth or stakes for its leads. Both Liu and Miller deserve much better material.
