American Gods season 2: Neil Gaiman to take larger role

American Gods season 2 premiere date

We’re now weeks removed from Bryan Fuller and Michael Green departing American Godsbut there still isn’t a whole lot of news out there in terms of who is going to officially replace them.

One thing that is known? That original American Gods author Neil Gaiman is going to have a larger role than ever. This is something that has been suspected for a while — the show needs some sort of consistent creative vision with Fuller gone — but it’s nice to have that finally be official. Starz head Chris Albrecht confirmed the larger role for Gaiman while at the TCA Winter Press Tour this week, and also went on to discuss (per TV Guide) the search for a new executive producer with more TV experience is underway:

“Neil Gaiman will take more of a central role and [be] moving forward into a traditional showrunner function … We’re looking for a partner for him who can ensure that the television part of this gets the appropriate attention. We’re very committed to American Gods.”

The challenges for American Gods are many. For starters, Gillian Anderson will not return as Media, and there’s a chance that some other actors from season 1 could leave given the long hiatus. Beyond that, it’s going to be challenging for the show to be able to replicate the creative vision matched by the first season — Fuller has a style that is very visual by nature, and often uses imagery to cultivate emotion just as much as dialogue.

While Albrecht admitted to struggles when it comes to the second season, it does still seem to be happening … at least in due time. The earliest that you’re likely going to see an American Gods season 2 at the moment is 2019 given that we’re not even at the point yet where scripts are together.
