Saturday Night Live preview: Sam Rockwell trains for hosting debut

Saturday Night Live

This weekend’s edition of Saturday Night Live will be Sam Rockwell’s hosting debut, and in the new preview released recently by NBC he is intent on showing that he is more than up for the challenge.

In the video below, you can see that Sam Rockwell’s hosting debut preparation includes one thing more so than anything else: Relentless preparation. Apparently, he trains for hosting late-night comedy shows the same way that some other people prepare for karate tournaments.

Rockwell, (who has a little bit of help from cast member Aidy Bryant) cuts an apple in half with his hand! Then, he has Aidy do the same thing … and let’s just say that things are not anywhere near as successful. While this entire promo is themed around a joke you could have probably seen coming a thousand miles away, it’s still worthy of a few laughs. That is often whether or not you can tell you have a great SNL promo; somehow, it delivers even when you know precisely where it is going for almost the entirety of its run.

Rockwell’s debut this weekend is an interesting one, mostly because he’s a veteran character actor as opposed to a big star and his hosting seems to be in part due to his appearance in the possible Oscar nominee Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. This is the time of the year when the show often does try to court possible Oscar nominees to come host the show — it’s either that or they seek out people who are from big-budget movies who were popular over the holiday break. This is why we’ve seen such people host the show in the past as Adam Driver and Felicity Jones, and also why we wouldn’t be all that shocked in the future if Daisy Ridley takes on the role. She’s already made a cameo, so why not just stretch that out and have the new face of Star Wars host a full show?
