How Roseanne revival is addressing politics in a different way than most

Roseanne revival

Roseanne has always been, in one way or another, a revolutionary show. While it may have a very traditional format and a family structure that most identify with, it tackles subjects in a way that very few other shows are willing to do.

What is one of those key subjects? Think along the lines of the Donald Trump Administration.

Roseanne Barr’s own political beliefs have been very well-documented, and at TCA today there was an at-times passionate discussion about politics. Roseanne in the show is a Donald Trump supporter, and this will be in some way a part of the narrative. This echoes in some ways Last Man Standing, a series ABC canceled last season in the midst of claims that the network was being biased towards a Republican audience.

As for what Roseanne had to say on the subject of putting politics into the show, here is what she had to say per The Hollywood Reporter:

“In The Rosanne Show, I’ve always tried to have it be a true reflection of the society we live in. I feel like half the people voted for Trump and half didn’t, so it’s just realistic … [This is a working-class show and, in] fact, it was working-class people who elected Trump, so I felt like that was very real and something that needed to be discussed and especially about polarization in the family … People actually hating other people for the way they voted, which I feel is not American.”

We’ll see what happens when Roseanne actually premieres later this season, but we wonder just how many viewers from both sides of the political spectrum will be tuning in to hear that message. It’s ultimately up to the viewers to determine whether or not Roseanne is a hit — even if there isn’t much of a liberal audience, it could still be. It’s the same as how many Democratic shows don’t have to rely all that much on conservatives to stick around.
