Golden Globes 2018: Seth Meyers opening features Kevin Spacey, Harvey Weinstein jokes

Globes -

Seth Meyers had a big challenge coming into the 2018 Golden Globes — trying to find a way to open the show in a way that was going to make just about everyone happy. This is a difficult night to host — typically the Globes are a little more of a lighthearted affair, but there are some serious issues at the heart of tonight’s awards show due to women and men speaking out against sexual harassment and bringing to light important issues.

For Meyers, the challenge is two-fold: Finding a way to ensure that these messages are heard, while also still trying to deliver some funny banter and commentary about the past year in film and television. It’s a very delicate balancing act, but he’s a capable comedian who we feel is going to be able to pull this off.

More on Seth Meyers’ opening

“Good evening, ladies and remaining gentlemen.” We know that this was going to get the night off to a good start. Another notable line? “It’s 2018, marijuana is finally allowed, and sexual harassment finally isn’t.” He also compared himself to a dog being shot in to outer space before saying that this is one of the few times men want their names being said out loud.

Meyers didn’t just discuss women’s rights and sexual harassment — he talked about the Hollywood Foreign Press being three words that made the President uncomfortable.

The best moment may have been when someone jokingly came on to hand The Post all of the Golden Globes before the end of the monologue. Also, he tried to hex Oprah Winfrey into running for President. There was a really good bit with Amy Poehler, and he did eventually circle back and recognize some of the activists who were in the room — the true heroes who have done so much for the country and continue to bring awarness and change moving into the future.

Was there controversy?

Sure. Personally, we wouldn’t have mentioned Harvey Weinstein at all. Why even let that guy have any more press at all? There are just some people who are so horrible they’re just not worth it. There was also a joke about Kevin Spacey’s House of Cards character having a terrible Southern accent, but we rather enjoyed that one.

Overall, we do think that this was a pretty solid opening for Seth. While we do think that the awards would have been better hosted from a woman’s point of view this year, he did try to address the serious subjects without changing the tone of the show all that much. It was also important that he closed the show by recognizing the activists in the room.
