McMafia episode 4 preview: Is Alex found out?

McMafia episode 4

Are you ready for some more drama on BBC One? McMafia has brought a lot of drama to the table, and to go along with that a brilliant performance from James Norton.

Will McMafia episode 4 be the episode where the walls start to close in on Norton’s Alex? In a word, yes. This is the episode where he finds that juggling his personal life and new-found private business life is starting to become too much.

For a little bit more insight on this subject, we suggest that you check out the official synopsis that CarterMatt has for you below — the BBC has a tendency to be very candid when it comes to sharing details about some of their stories, so know that in advance. You’re getting a lot of information here!

“Benny Chopra (Atul Kale) receives a call informing him that Vadim’s (Merab Ninidze) heroin shipment is moving across the border from Pakistan into India – and he is surprised by the quantities reported.

Dilly (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), who is spying on Benny, realises that something unusual is going on. He breaks into Benny’s empty office with his men, but they are interrupted mid search by a late-working accountant.

Holding the man at gunpoint, Dilly has him access Benny’s computer, where they find the information they require to pull off a heist. However Semiyon (David Strathairn) says Alex must decide whether or not to give the go ahead…

Back in London at Godman Capital a suspicious Karin (Kemi-Bo Jacobs) tries to access the details of the fund which Alex is using to move Semiyon’s money around, but finds it password protected. After she confronts Alex (James Norton), he hires a professional hacker to cover his electronic trail.

Suspicions are raised closer to home when Rebecca (Juliet Rylance) discovers that Alex has a secret second phone. Soon afterwards Karin approaches Rebecca about her concerns: have Alex’s lies finally caught up with him?

Deeply worried by the recent developments in Prague, Vadim manages to track down Benes (Karel Roden) and puts him under surveillance. When this proves unfruitful, Vadim decides to make things personal: he needs to get to Benes and find out who’s backing him.”

As CarterMatt has noted, there is a lot going on here, but the main event that we are going to see in here is Alex’s life starting to unravel. What sort of hope does he have for a future? He becomes a shadow self, someone tied to his dealings with the Russians but nothing else. We do think that in some ways, the comparisons between this series and Breaking Bad are apt — the more that Alex gains in some ways, the more he loses in others. That’s one of the reasons why McMafia is such a fascinating show — it’s challenging and thought-provoking. It puts you into places where you are forced to think about difficult questions about the nature of power and how it corrupts.
