Gillian Anderson leaving American Gods, role of Media
In a new feature piece over at the Los Angeles Times, it was confirmed that Anderson is going to depart the Starz drama American Gods and will not return for a second season. As for the reason why, that appears to be tied to the departure of Bryan Fuller and Michael Green as showrunners. Anderson played the role of Media on the series, one of the New Gods who often appeared to Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle) in a number of different forms. This had to be a fun role to play for Anderson, basically since she was many different people in one.
We’re not a book reader and cannot speak towards Media’s future in the American Gods source material, but it feels as though if the series wants to change actors they can probably just argue that this is another face that the character has.
In general, we’re still curious to see what the future holds for American Gods just because this is one of those shows where the showrunners are so close to the overall story. How do you push this narrative forward without the vision of Fuller and Green? When is season 2 going to really get going? It’s already been a good while since the first season aired and there are absolutely still many questions floating around out there about when the next season would air. We still love the source material and many of the cast members, but it’s fair to wonder just what the series will look like and precisely how well it will do as we look more towards the future.
