Mad Men alum Kiernan Shipka to be new Sabrina, the Teenage Witch
The streaming provider has confirmed that Kiernan Shipka, best known for playing Sally Draper for many years on Mad Men, is going to be the start of their upcoming adaptation from Riverdale and Archie Comics’ own Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. We don’t really have to spend much time diving into this in order to make our reaction clear: It’s a perfect cast for what should be a darker version of the show than the ABC classic starring Melissa Joan Hart. We know from Mad Men that Shipka can tackle some darker source material without all that much of a problem. She also can tackle some of the lighter source material whenever there is some.
One of the interesting things about seeing this new version of Sabrina is seeing if it has changed or evolved in some way because of the path that it’s been on leading to it arriving on Netflix with a substantial commitment. (Read more about that over at the link here.) At first, it seemed as though this show was going to be a direct spin-off of Riverdale and would air on The CW alongside it. Now, things are a little bit different since Netflix made Warner Bros. TV an offer that they simply couldn’t walk away from. Given how popular Riverdale has become over on Netflix, this move probably made even more sense for them.
We’ll have to wait and see if this new version of the Sabrina character lives up to the hype; for now, we at least know that they have the right producer and star on board. Netflix also had a tendency to really commit to the long-term success of their products.
