Vikings season 6: Katheryn Winnick begins work as director!

Katheryn Winnick

For those of you who love getting Vikings season 6 updates right in the middle of season 5, how about this one via Katheryn Winnick?

In a new post on Twitter this week, Winnick officially confirmed that work has begun on her first episode of the series as director! This news was first announced back when season 6 was officially confirmed to be happening, but it’s still nice to see that we’ve made it to this point in production.

Winnick also posted a picture of the first page of her script, which seems to say that she is doing episode #608. Note that this isn’t necessarily confirmation that Winnick is helming the eighth episode of the season; it’ll probably be around that point. Sometimes production numbers are off an episode or two from where they air. The rest of the script page is pretty familiar — did you really expect anyone to be writing this episode other than Michael Hirst? For the record, we really think there’s a show-within-a-show in the making here about how in the world Hirst is able to write as many episodes as he does!? So amazing!

While we’re very excited to see Winnick’s directorial voice and how she frames the story presented to her, we’re going to be waiting a while — a LONG while — to see it. Even beyond this current arc of ten episodes there are still ten more episodes coming later this year. That’s before we get around to season 6 premiering. We certainly wouldn’t be opposed if Vikings continued its current airing structure, which would allow everyone to be on a nice, steady pace for however long the show lasts.

If Vikings does retain its current airing structure, expect Winnick’s directorial debut to air around a year from now — that’s a  seriously long wait for an episode of any TV show, but with a show this good we do like to think that it’s worth it. Plus, that does give the geniuses in post-production a chance to get together all the action pieces, the sound mixing, and everything else that goes into an epic show like this. Not many people know this show as intimately as Winnick does so we are really excited to see what she does in the director’s chair – you know it’s going to be good.

What do you want to see on Winnick’s upcoming Vikings episode … or is it really too early on to speculate on such things? Share some of your thoughts in the comments below!
