The Crown season 3 spoilers: Is Helena Bonham Carter playing Princess Margaret?

Crown season 2

Do we now have some of the first major The Crown season 3 casting news? Early indications sound like that could very well be the case.

For the time being, here is what CarterMatt knows. According to a new report from Entertainment Weekly, Helena Bonham Carter is near a deal that will enable her to play the older version of Princess Margaret on the Netflix drama series. She would be replacing Vanessa Kirby, who was sensational during her time on the show in the role. This would be the second official recasting for The Crown if the deal goes through, as Olivia Colman of The Night Manager / Broadchurch is already set to replace Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth. These moves are being made as a result of a major time jump between seasons; the goal of The Crown is to capture the entire reign of Elizabeth II, and at the moment we’re jettisoning towards the middle era.

Hopefully, there are some more castings announced in the days ahead; we know that for us, we’re very much curious to learn precisely who could be starring in the role of Philip. Matt Smith did an exceptional job as the character, and with that he’s set the bar rather high for anyone else who could come on board and take his spot.

The Crown season 3 could premiere as early as this fall, but we wouldn’t be shocked if it is pushed back later to accommodate all of the changes. This show may not have a whole lot of special effects, but in between the sets and the costumes this is one of the most elaborate, ambitious productions out there. Bonham Carter would be a perfect fit for it, and based on what we know about Princess Margaret there is plenty of meaty material to come.
