Call the Midwife sets the stage for big season 7 with consolidated Christmas Special ratings

Call the Midwife Christmas Special

Call the Midwife season 7 is now looking all the more merry and bright, and it’s because of the just-released Christmas Special consolidated ratings for the BBC.

These ratings, which include delayed viewing across a number of different measures, showed that the Christmas Special (themed around the Big Freeze) drew 9.6 million viewers. This marks some of the best overall viewership for Call the Midwife at Christmas over the past few years. It’s a remarkable achievement and really something that the network and the show producers should be more than thrilled with.

One of the things that does make this even more impressive is viewing rating in relationship to how many people there actually are in Britain. We’re talking about a country of around 65 million people, so basically somewhere close to one out of every seven people is watching Call the Midwife in some form. Think about this in relation to an American show — it would take almost 50 million viewers for America to have the same ratio with any of its programming.

Call the Midwife season 7 is slated to premiere on BBC later this month and all early expectations suggest that this will be another highly-related season. By renewing the series up through the end of season 9, the commitment from the powers that be at the network is already there. They are certainly more than a little bit confident that the series is going to find a way to keep getting the numbers. They’ve got every reason to feel confident, given that they keep changing out some of the various cast members and nothing ever seems to be changing when it comes to their viewership.

With these three more seasons we anticipate many more Christmas Specials also coming your way. One of the significant challenges that goes along with that is the simple fact that creator Heidi Thomas has to keep coming up with fascinating stories to tell. They don’t necessarily have to be related to the holidays, but we do think that it helps if they are.
