Chicago Med season 3 episode 5 review: Will Halstead goes from doctor to patient

Chicago Med season 3 premiere

Chicago Med season 3 episode 5 was a story about recovery — namely, what you do to bounce back when adversity strikes. We don’t feel like there’s one answer to this issue that is always right, but there is certainly one that is right most of the time. When you’re facing struggles, really the best thing that you can hope for is the support of those close to you. You’re going to be so much better off taking that support in the long run rather than shying away and internalizing your problems.

More than anyone, Dr. Sarah Reese should be the most qualified to tackle some of these problems. She is in psychiatry, after all, and yet she’s the one who is off trying to purchase a gun rather than talk to Dr. Charles about some of her fears. Her combative patient in the fall finale slashed her tires, and tonight, she freaked out after Noah was attacked by the brother of a young man who died under his care. She suddenly felt unsafe working at the hospital and it’s easy to understand why. You don’t go through trauma like this and suddenly feel okay … you also have to remember that some of this trauma is also linked to what happened to Jack Kellogg.

Dr. Charles wants to be there for her, provided that she wants him to be. Meanwhile, Noah has the support of his sister, but even he decided to head home rather than going out on the town with her or anyone else.

As for Dr. Halstead, he chose tonight to let Dr. Manning care for him (in more ways than one!) after the two battled an unknown ailment for most of the hour. A young girl, (after returning home from Australia) found herself becoming temporarily paralyzed. Will came in contact with her, and soon after that he lost his ability to walk. Natalie was able to figure out that the result of this was a tick, which had jumped from the patient onto the doctor when they were trying to diagnose her. He realized that there wasn’t a whole lot that could be done, and as a result of that just accepted that he’s stuck in bed for a little while … but he will get better.

The other main story of this episode also revolved around adversity courtesy of April and Dr. Choi, who struggled with the possibility that their patient could die because she would not submit to taking an HIV test. They had to work hard to change her mind and, suffice it to say, this was not easy. Eventually, she did submit, and on the other side of that April decided that it was okay starting to let others in on her secret. She admitted for the first time at work that Ethan was her boyfriend — she didn’t want to let the fear of her job changing get in the way of something that seems to be making her very happy.

CarterMatt Verdict

Chicago Med season 3 episode 5 was probably the season’s best episode, mostly because of the fact that it took many of the stories we’ve seen all season and allowed them to escalate to new and interesting places. Sarah is allowing some of her fears to take over here while, in the case of April, she’s allowing herself to be open. They’re going in different directions, but that doesn’t mean that either one of them is necessarily set up for a favorable outcome.
