New Year’s Rockin’ Eve 2018: Mariah Carey performs ‘Vision of Love’
Well, this time around it was pretty clear from the jump that Mariah was out to prove one thing and one thing only: She can really perform and bounce back with the best of them. She performed a number of her biggest songs including “Hero” and “Vision of Love,” and in the process chose to do songs that were a little bit more stationary that didn’t require that much moving all over the place. Can you really blame her given just how cold it was? It’s hard to. She was clearly singing (though she had a backing choir), and she chose to do songs that were for the most part inspirational in nature.
Was there a part of us that wanted to see some sort of chaos happen again just for the sake of this being a crazy way to close out 2017? Sure, but there was no real way that Mariah was going to let that happen again. She made a point of doing a thorough sound-check before the show and viewed this as an opportunity for some serious redemption for what happened last time. (Not that she really needed redemption, given that she is still one of the biggest artists of all time.)
Overall, the irony here is quite simple: Mariah had a much better performance with no major gaffes; yet, there’s a pretty good chance that she won’t be invited back just because a big part of what brought her back to New Year’s Rockin Eve’ WAS the gaffe. She’ll move on and do plenty of other big concerts, we’re sure.
