Vikings season 5 episode 7 review: Bjorn and Lagertha prepare for war

Vikings Bjorn and Lagertha

While the last episode of Vikings season 5 wasn’t our favorite it has set up a lot of storylines that are building towards a pretty big battle where many of our main characters will be reunited. Ivar and Harald are working together to find a way to dethrone Lagertha while Astrid has done some things we’d rather not speak of in order to get a message to Lagertha warning her of Ivar and Harald’s plans. While we have really appreciated the cool battles this season it feels like there is way more of a focus on the battles in season 5 more so then anything else. What we originally loved about the show were the unusual friendships and learning about the viking culture. This season feels a bit disjointed as our cast is all spread out and there aren’t really any interesting connections like their has been in the past.

Bjorn returns to Kattegat

After his time in the Mediterranean Bjorn and his fleet have returned home to Kattegat, but it’s not exactly as he wants it to be. He’s happy to see his children, but he’s admitted that he is no longer in love with Torvi. Lagertha gets Bjorn up to speed on what Harald and Ivar are up to (and the fracture between his brothers) and introduces him to some of the other forces that are willing to fight along side them – including a princess that Bjorn is immediately attracted to. He proposes marriage to her and she accepts.

The relationship between Bjorn and Torvi is one of the few relationships left that we were truly invested in, so it breaks our hearts a bit that Bjorn is done with her and moving onto this strange princess. The whole thing reminds us greatly of when Ragnar fell for Aslaug and we were screaming at our TV’s “don’t do it Ragnar!!!!”. We were hoping that his time with Astrid was just a bit of youthful arrogance and that after his travels Torvi would be missed, but alas we are all heart broken at the end of this relationship.

Also, can we say that the kiss between Ubbe and Torvi was a little bit strange? Margrethe isn’t a fan of the kiss either and tries to get Ubbe back on track – telling him to fight with Ivar when he lands in Kattegat and make sure Bjorn dies so that he will be the eldest son of Ragnar still alive – making him the king and her the queen.

Ivar and Heahmund bond

We still aren’t sure if Heahmund is really a willing participant in this battle with Ivar, but Ivar doesn’t really care either way. The more they talk the more they learn that they are both brilliant strategists and they both want to win, so while they may not see eye to eye on most everything, these are some key points that they agree on and it’s enough to have them on the same side. We have been waiting to see if Heahmund and Ivar would find some kind of a bond, but because neither of them trust each other it seems that they just can’t move any further in this. Heahmund is trying to prove that he can be trusted, but can he really be trusted?

CarterMatt’s overall thoughts

We loved seeing the reunion of Lagertha and Bjorn – it was a long time coming and she really needed him to return. She has been facing an uphill battle that has been making her feel weakened, but after having a talk with Bjorn we see her returning to her former self and really getting ready for this battle against Harald and Ivar.
