Shadowhunters season 4: Early hope for a renewal
After all, Shadowhunters is one of those rare shows that has the breadth of source material possible for you to be able to look far into the future. The third season premieres in late March (as a reminder, the date was moved up) and will likely air in two batches — the spring and then the late summer / fall. This is a show that Freeform is banking on more in a post-Pretty Little Liars era in order to get great ratings. They need some big hits, and some shows that are going to drive significant social impressions. This is a show with the potential to do both of those things and do them well.
Is there a certain threshold that the show needs to reach in the ratings in order for Shadowhunters season 4 to happen? A lot of times when we write some of these articles about the future of certain shows we try to pinpoint specific numbers. The reason for that is simply that it’s helpful to establish some sort of benchmark as to what a network may be hoping to get. Here, it’s almost irrelevant. While we’re sure that Freeform would like season 3 to average around a 0.3 rating again in the 18-49 demographic, they’re probably not as concerned with the live+same-day ratings in the short-term. Beyond The Fosters this is their highest-rated and most-watched show live, and it has potential that easily stretches on beyond those numbers. It’s an enormously popular show all around the world, and the money that it probably makes from licensing and broadcasting alone makes it more valuable than almost any other show that they have.
Beyond that, there are also many other viewership elements stateside that probably don’t get anywhere near the same attention that they deserve. Take, for example, the show’s success in streaming or in DVR ratings. There’s not a thirst for everyone out there to watch the show right away. So long as they know which corners of the internet to avoid they won’t have to see any spoilers.
Ultimately, if you’re nervous about season 3 being the last season of the show the message that we’ve got for you at the moment is simple: Don’t be. There is very little evidence at present that we’re anywhere near the end of the road.
