2017’s most-pirated shows: Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, The Flash
It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that (per TorrentFreak – who compiles most of this information annually), Game of Thrones is #1 on the list. This is a show that is a perfect combination of components that often lead to piracy — it’s popular all over the world, it airs on premium cable, and it’s a show that you almost have to watch right away in order to avoid spoilers. There are so many other shows out there on television that you can watch a few weeks later without anyone telling you what happened, but this isn’t one of them.
Meanwhile, seeing The Walking Dead at #2 also isn’t much of a surprise when you consider that the zombie drama also has many of the same things going for it — with the exception being that it’s a basic cable show and a little more readily available. We do think that as the popularity for the show wanes we will start to see the overall number of pirated versions of it decrease, as well.
Beyond just this though, there are some surprises on this list. For one, who would’ve thought that a show like The Flash, with a relatively small viewership and a network TV audience, would be #3 on the list this year? Or, how about a comedy in The Big Bang Theory that has been on the air for so long and doesn’t have that much to spoil? Seeing Rick and Morty, Prison Break, and Sherlock into the list this year isn’t surprising given that they all cater to young, male audiences; traditionally, this is the demographic that pirates the most.
Suits, this year at #9, remains one of the most interesting entries here given that it was one of the most-pirated shows even before all of the Meghan Markle – Prince Harry headlines started to come out. This is a show that viewers just so happen to love, and not just because of its Royal connection.
