Is a Blue Bloods season 9 renewal assured, and when should CBS announce it?
The biggest thing that Blue Bloods has struggled from over the years is a lack of consistent publicity; ironically, it did have that this year with the departure of Amy Carlson at the start of the season. In turn, what we’ve had a chance to learn is just how independent of press the show really is. It didn’t draw any better numbers around the Carlson departure, but it also didn’t get any worse. Basically, it remains the same show it’s always been, and that is in part why we can imagine this show being on the air for many more years still.
Even though Blue Bloods airs on Friday nights in the near-impossible 10:00 p.m. Eastern timeslot, this is still a show bringing in on average over 9 million viewers a week. It’s demo performance has slid down slightly, but there’s no reason for CBS to be concerned. There is no other Friday show on another network performing anywhere near as well as this, and as a result of that we do still feel like Blue Bloods is a series that can last however long that CBS wants for it to — with there being one condition mixed in there.
That condition is more or less tied to the future of some of the cast members. The good news is that there isn’t much word out there about anyone leaving at the end of this season. Yet, we are at the point in the show’s run where cast contracts could be negotiated on a regular basis and shows in general get more difficult and costly to make. Filming in New York City also isn’t cheap. Ultimately, you should expect to see a Blue Bloods season 9 renewal happen, but probably not until either March or April. There are many more things to work through as a part of the renewal process than you would think.
