Why Luther season 5 with Idris Elba may be bigger than ever

Luther season 5

Luther season 5 may end up being one of 2018’s most-anticipated shows, provided of course it comes out next year. There are plenty of reasons why this is so highly anticipated by fans starting with the fact that it’s one of the best crime dramas of its time anchored by one of the best working actors today in Idris Elba. If you’ve loved much of his past work, there is a reasonably good chance that you are also going to love what he brings to the table here. This is an actor who has, time and time again, delivered some exceptionally dark stories as the title character. We’re not sure that time is going to heal all wounds for him (isn’t he quite the tortured soul?), but we’re going to have a chance to find out.

Speaking recently to Digital Spy, series writer Neil Cross gave us some cause for excitement about Luther season 5 — something that is certainly nice to have, given that we haven’t quite had it in a while:

“Idris and I talked seriously about what we wanted to do, and what I can say is that season 5 is huge. … It’s going to be the biggest we’ve done. We’re really excited by the script, and the story – and Idris and I are very aware that whenever we’ve done another series, we’re like, ‘That’s it’.

“Idris has a big career. And we leave and then we all start missing it in a couple of weeks, and I start stockpiling Luther ideas and making Luther notes. And we know that we always come back – so we want to come back and do one more really big series.”

We’re sure that there are some outlets out there who would see this quote and automatically interpret it to mean “Luther is ending after season 5″ — yet, CarterMatt is rather hesitant to say that simply for the reason that we’ve seen this cycle play out before. At the time in which season 4 was coming out it appeared as though we were gearing up to say farewell to the show. Now, here we are in season 5 with the same exact thing happening.

At this point, the only way in which we see ourselves buying into Luther ending is in the event John Luther dies on screen and we see someone bury the body. That’s a little bit morbid, but this is what television has done when it comes to shifting our perception as to when “dead” is actually that. For now, we’re just ready to be psyched up about Luther season 5 possibly coming together sooner than we thought.

Excited for Luther season 5, whenever it premieres?
