Netflix Mindhunter season 2: Will Ed Kemper, Richard Speck be back?

Mindhunter Ed Kemper

One of the best parts of Mindhunter season 1 was the time we spent with Ed Kemper (as weird as that is to write). He’s a well known serial killer infamous for doing unspeakable things to his family and co-eds he picked up hitchhiking, but he stood out on the show for a number of reasons that didn’t really have to do with his crimes. One of them is the performance from Cameron Britton who encapsulated Ed Kemper in a way that made us actually want to learn more about him. Then there was the way he spoke and interacted with Holden and Tench that made us feel almost like there was an understanding growing with them as they tried to learn how Kemper’s mind works in hopes to catch other serial killers before they go to far. (Warning: Spoilers ahead).

Season 1 of Mindhunter left Holden in a very interesting position with Kemper. After spending so much time together, Kemper was left feeling disjointed when Holden stopped coming by the prison to see him and after numerous unanswered letters, Kemper decided to try to commit suicide as a way to get Holden’s attention – and it worked. When Holden met up with Kemper at the hospital, he admitted to Holden that this was the only way he was able to rekindle their bond and in a brief moment where we thought that Kemper might kill him, he instead hugged Holden revealing that there is a legitimate bond between them… something that Holden was terrified to discover was true.

So are we going to see more of Kemper in Mindhunter season 2? While it hasn’t been confirmed yet that he will make an appearance we suspect that he will be back. How could he not be after that ending? Holden is going to have a lot of unresolved feelings about Kemper and may need to see him again as a way to figure out what’s happening to his own mind. Not only that, but Netflix released a 2 minute video of Kemper eating an egg salad sandwich (which you can see here) around Christmas and we suspect that they wouldn’t be using him as promotional material if they were done with him.

As for another famous serial killer that we saw on the show, we are sure that Richard Speck’s problems with Holden aren’t over either. When we last saw Speck he had filed a complaint against Holden after their meeting where he claimed that Holden played games with his mind (of course Speck had a lot more choice words then that, but this is a family website) – and then Holden lied about it to the FBI when they were investigating Speck’s claims. Again, there is no confirmation that Speck will be back (as much as we hope that he is), but we do suspect that his claim against Holden will still be going strong.

While we do know that there is going to be a Mindhunter season 2, there is no confirmed return date at this point. Know that CarterMatt will have that for you as soon as it’s available.
